About the project

Nysa County, in the framework of Poland-Czech Republic Cross-Border Operational Programme 2007-2013, realized two projects on the history of witch trials. In both cases, partners of the Nysa County were: Jeseniki – Tourist Association from Sumperk and the City of Sumperk.

Project „Via the Witch Cycling Track through the Czech-Polish border areas"  (2008-2010)

In 2009, thanks to the implementation of this project in the Nysa County, a new tourist product was created – cycling route “Via the Witch Cycling Track”. The route runs through the places connected with the history of the witch trials, it starts in Paczków and runs through Otmuchów and Nysa to Głuchołazy, where it connects with the Czech section leading up to the Mohelnice. Important points of the route are the cities Nysa and Sumperk, where in the framework of the project permanent exhibitions on the witch trials were made.

Project actions carried out on the Polish side:

  • conversion of rooms and courtyard of Museum in Nysa on account of the exhibition;

  • making the exhibition on the history of witch trials on the border area of Nysa and Jesenik. The exhibition, which the persons concerned visit with audio guides, also consists of: the herbalist chamber, trials room, so called courtroom, prison and torture chamber, and the road of convicted – courtyard connects the courtroom with the prison and the torture chamber. Interactive infokiosk located in the Museum lobby is an additional element of the exhibition.

  • laying out and marking the witch cycle route in the area of Nysa County (marking colour – black) and placing 10 informational boards along the route;

  • publishing the guide along with the map of the witches route;

  • organizing the series of 10 museum lessons on the history of witch trials on the Czech – Polish border;

  • organizing the meeting promoting the publication issued by the Czech partner;

  • promotion of the project.

Project actions carried out on the Czech side:

  • making the museum exhibition in Sumperk;

  • issuing the publication “Report about disbelief” on the history of witch trials on the Nysa – Jesenik border

  • promotion of the project.

Project „Via the Witch Cycling Track through the Czech-Polish border areas – phase II" (2012-2015)


The project is the continuation of the project described and its actions serve to the development of the functioning project and making it more attractive.


Project actions carried out on the Polish side:

  • 3 tourist resting sheds were built along with the informational boards presenting not only the information on the history of witch trials, but also concerning tourist attractions in the region;

  • a website and a promotional video dedicated to the trail were made;

  • a guide with the map of the trail was issued, as well as a confirmation booklet for tourists that want to earn a tourist badge of the witch trail;

  • a bicycle rally via the witch trail was organized.

Czech partners of the project in the framework of the project:

  • organized outdoor sculpture workshops

  • organized rest area in a suburban forest in Sumperk (in addition to the sculptures created during outdoor workshops, there is also a rest shed and 2 informational boards;

  • provided also a professional campaign promoting the project
