In the south of Opolszczyzna region, in Nysa County, another tourist product has been created. This time it is a tourist cycling route, “Via the Witch Track”, with the length of 85km. The route, as the name suggests, runs through the places connected with the history of witch trials and allows one to get to know the dark times of inquisition.
However, witches are not the only attraction of the route. Along the track, we can see many interesting corners and historical buildings of the Nysa County. We will see the places where gold was mined, near Głuchołazy, we will visit fortification facilities of the Nysa fortress, from the tower of medieval bishop castle in Otmuchów we will admire beautiful mountain landscapes, or we will visit Paczków – called the Polish Carcassonne – with almost completely preserved medieval town fortifications.
The idea of mapping out such route was taken from our neighbours from the South, and it is the continuation of similar route mapped out in Czech Republic several years ago. The Czech section of the route is abouth 140km long and runs from Mohelnice, through Sumperk, Jesenik, and ends in Zlaté Hory, where in the City Museum we can find the exposition with instruments of torture used during the witch trials. This is where the Polish section of the route starts. After crossing the “open” border, the route runs to Głuchołazy with the Gallows Mountain, Jarnołtówek with the Grave of a Witch, Nysa with the museum exposition on the witch trials, Otmuchów with the monument of the executioner’s wife, and ends in Paczków, at the executioner’s house. Tourists will also find informational boards on the route, with its map and a description of historical events and interesting monuments that are near the route. The route complements already existing in this region, in the Polish – Czech border area, set of cycle routes of several hundred kilometres, which lets tourist to ride signed routes on the Polish and Czech side of the border. There are not many places in Poland that have such a beautiful landscapes (mountains and lakes) and a rich, shrouded in mystery history, and many legends that mix with the facts. Places, which are intriguing, both for the history researchers, and tourist willing to spend holidays actively. Such cycle route is not only an idea for promoting the region, but also a way for healthy and sporty lifestyle. Therefore, we encourage you to visit the region of Nysa County and learn about interesting, though sometimes so cruel history of the Polish – Czech border area.
